The U.S. Department of Justice is granting one million dollars to the city of Edinburg.
The funds from the office of community oriented policing services are to be used in the hiring of eight police officers and will be donated within a three-year period. It also requires an $800,000 cash match from the city.
Edinburg's 2016-2017 fiscal year budget also include nine new officer positions, combined the 17 new positions will bring the police force to 160.The last time the city received a cops grant was in the 1990's.
